Hidden Garden Gems at Larnach Castle

by Insiders Dunedin

Many people miss one of the most interesting hidden gems located in the gardens at Larnach Castle. Inspired by the discovery of figures of the Duchess and Knave amidst the overgrown garden by Margaret Barker shortly after purchasing the property, the garden now features a range of elements from the Alice in Wonderland book written in 1865 by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll.

Next time you visit the gardens, make sure you look out for the Queen of Hearts Throne, the "Curious Door" in a tree trunk, a bronze sculpture of Alice and of course the famous Cheshire Cat, which can be found cheekily grinning down from a high vantage point near the front of the castle.
