Dunedin becomes Giga rich
Dunedin has now been crowned New Zealand's first Gigatown after winning the Chorus' led competition to offer one town gigabit internet connection at a similar price to current broadband rates.
The campaign has successfully pulled together many of the Dunedin community and has seen a great deal of support from a number of the city's businesses. A huge amount of time and effort has been put in by Project Director Josh Jenkins of the Digital Office, and the steering team made up of prominent Dunedin business people and city councilors. The GigatownDun HQ below the DCC buildings in the Octagon has become the city's operations hub. Dunedin supporters have spent countless hours tweeting, instagraming, facebook commenting, and plenty of #gigatowndun hash-tagging. The efforts on social media along with a strong digital strategy prepared over three months by the steering team has led to a victory for the Dunedin over rivals Gisborne, Timaru, Nelson, and Wanaka.
We now have to look forward to seeing what can become possible with having such a fast internet connection in the city.
