Located in Mornington we visited the great new hair salon Aurum. This new venture is run by husband and wife who are excited about a fresh start in Dunedin. Taking a completely blank canvas they have totally refurbished their salon trying to up-cycle where possible. The result a clean, inviting space that anyone could be comfortable in. Going for an old school unique look, they opened their doors in January this year.
Ria, originally trained in Arrowtown at the D'or Salon moved to Dunedin to start their family business and raise their young family. A recognised talent in the industry, she was awarded New Zealand's apprentice of the year.
Leaving a well established client base in Arrowtown was a bold move. However, she describes the move to Dunedin has been a great experience. Aurum has received great support from the Dunedin community and the Mornington businesses have welcomed them with open arms. The business is steadily growing its client base primarily through word-of-mouth. Not to mention, their strong digital presence has gone a long way in putting them on the map in Dunedin.
Aurum has really embraced digital technology and utilises another Dunedin based software Timely to run their business. Clients are able to book online through their website or facebook and everything they do is hosted in the cloud.
Currently, Ria is the only stylist in the salon who can take care of almost anything hair related. Majority of their clients to date are women. Ria does a lot of colours, cutting, weddings and formals. Despite this, her husband is looking to undergo an apprenticeship focusing on men's hair to bring a barber shop aspect to their salon. Both have identified a growing trend in this area with a lot of men taking a real interest in the likes of a razor shave and personal care. Aurum stocks L'oreal hair products and Cloud Nine straighteners. For the men, they stock Shiner Gold products.
Clients travel great distances to visit this salon coming from all over Dunedin. It is not a surprise once you meet this great couple who run the salon as they truly do make you feel welcome once you enter their doors. If you are in need of your next cut, colour or prep for that special event, it is definitely worth getting in touch with them. They are easy to find and they have a large number of 60 minute parks right outside the front door!
