Nestled on Fingall Street in South Dunedin is an unassuming building, where passers-by would be none the wiser that it holds 2,500 years of medicinal plant wisdom. It is the headquarters of Artemis, New Zealand’s most trusted source of plant medicine.

For centuries, cultures around the world have harnessed the healing properties of plants. Artemis has created a range of natural organic products to support the health and wellbeing of people of all ages.

While medicinal teas are their specialty and quite frankly, very tasty, there is also a range of oral liquids and topical creams to aid a number of common ailments. Not content with simply treating symptoms, Artemis believes in proactive self-care and addressing health issues before they become problems.

Artemis’ founder, Sandra Clair, is one of New Zealand’s most highly qualified experts in the area of plant medicine. Sandra is a Swiss trained medical herbalist and a medical anthropologist (M.A.), holds health science degrees from New Zealand and Australia, and is currently completing a doctoral thesis in health sciences. She is also a published researcher, and has a weekly column on

Sandra was deeply influenced when learning her craft during a three-year apprenticeship with Sister Pauline, a Franciscan nun, midwife and medical herbalist, and through her connection with the key Renaissance Materia Medica, a 500-year-old pharmacopeia of Traditional European Medicine. Sandra’s passion for self-care is evident in the way she radiates when she speaks, it fills the room and could almost be described as contagious. A five-minute conversation with Sandra will leave you inspired to be a plant medicine warrior forever.

When Sandra moved to New Zealand from Switzerland, she saw a country filled with clean air and opportunity. Falling in love with Otago’s natural landscape, lifestyle and people, she planted roots in Dunedin and hasn’t looked back. Each year, Sandra and the Artemis team make trips to Central Otago to harvest wild Alpine plants by hand. Thyme is a cornerstone in many of the medicinal teas and oral liquids, proving the lengths Artemis goes to in order to deliver quality products.

The company name relates to the Greek goddess of the wilderness and protector of women. Similar to its namesake, Artemis offers plant medicines to care for our people, while protecting the environment.

Artemis products are stocked in all major health stores and pharmacies nationwide, or can be delivered to your door when you order on You can also pop in for a visit at Fingall Street – there’s always a brew ready to serve.
