This exhibition will mark Sam Foley’s 20th Solo Exhibition, consisting of 12 large scale paintings.

Fresh from a residency in Switzerland, now back in the environment he grew up in, Dunedin’s Otago Harbour, Foley explores what makes this place unique in tying together the different elements that make up this body.

The idea sprung from a period spent in 2013 living in Port Chalmers.

“I had for sometime wanted to paint the bottom intersection of the Port township, where those 5 streets converge. The old BNZ building sits on the left, where Raplh Hotere’s studio was and where as a child I heard about something or someone called an artist. My friend lived next door and we would try to and peer in through the windows to see what was going on. From there the idea just snow-balled and grew to encompass the greater harbour area”.

This series is the result of one and a half years work in the studio, is a significant body and emblematic of this artist’s expanding oeuvre.
