The South Dunedin Community Art Project | Pledge Me campaign launched
The Malcam Charitable Trust are working alongside the South Dunedin Police and 3 local artists for the second year, to run the South Dunedin Community Art Project for Youth Week 2015. Last year’s project was an ambitious 160 meter long mural on Wilkie road where we worked with 70 young people over 1 week. The success of last year’s project saw three competing groups of “taggers” working collectively on a project, which still stands 1 year later.
For this year’s project we have launched a PledgeMe campaign to ask for support from the local community to help us raise the remainder of the funds needed for the project. To this date we have had the kind support of the DCC, Warehouse Stationary South Dunedin, Mitre 10 Mega, Murray Turner Painters and Decorators and the Presbyterian Support. The South Dunedin Lions Club have generously offered to feed the hungry young artists with a sausage sizzle throughout the week.
This year, artist’s Aroha Novak, Guy Howard-Smith and James Colin Bellaney will work with 50 young people from The Malcam Trust, Kings High School, PACT, SWITCH, Dunedin Community College and Dunedin Training Centre. The artists will paint a background mural on a 67 meter section of the Donaghy’s wall at Bathgate Park, and work with young people during workshops to mentor them to develop positive representations reflecting this year’s Youth Week theme. Their representations will then be painted by the young people over the background mural during Youth Week, 23rd-31st May.
This year’s Youth Week theme is “We are the Future”. Youth Week is about recognising the contributions and achievements of young people in New Zealand. This project recognises and supports young people through providing passionate young artists with a positive outlet for their creativity, an opportunity for them to learn from professional artists and for them to give back by beautifying our community.
If you would like to donate to the project please visit our PledgeMe page at www.pledgeme.co.nz/projects/3533 all donations go towards the time of the artists and the resources needed. Paint donations would also be greatly appreciated, you can contact Michela at email@example.com.
