LOCAL FOOD HERO - WHO ATE ALL THE PIES
Agree or disagree we are a pie loving nation and when you find a pie made with just the right degree of flakiness in the pastry, packed with quality sourced ingredients, surrounded with a rich gravy. It has to be celebrated. It is a New Zealanders cultural right to have a damn good pie and this is why this weeks ‘Local Food Hero’ is Who Ate All The Pies!
LOCAL FOOD HERO – WHO ATE ALL THE PIES
Factory shop open to public 9.30-3.30
Every Saturday at the Otago Farmers Market and at all good supermarkets
Steven is originally from Lancashire in the North of England and if you are not aware this is pie country so when arriving in Dunedin he saw an opportunity and he readily jumped at the chance of owning a pie shop and further more to create a ‘proper’ pie. Steven was disappointed with the quality of pies available so he made a promise to himself and to his customer that he would do just that – create a ‘proper’ pie!
Steven is a staunch supporter of local ingredients which of course go into his pies. And what I personally like about his pies is that he isn’t trying to be a gourmet pie company he would rather be known for his quality and the fact that he does things right; like make the pastry with lard, thicken the gravies with a good old fashioned roux and he even takes the time to let the flavours mature before they are put into the pie.
Who Ate All The Pies do a delicious array of single and family pies with fillings like free-range chicken bacon and thyme, chunky steak, beef mushroom and red wine, my personal favourite ‘proper’ mince and not to mention the specialty range which includes Cornish pastie, English pork pie, rabbit and hare and that is only naming a few.
Thank you WHO ATE ALL THE PIES and to Steven for not letting us down and for supplying us with a ‘proper’ hand crafted pie! They are delicious!
