Today we manage to get out of the inner city and enjoyed the surprisingly short drive out to Port Chalmers. The reason for the trip was to check out "The Portsider" a hidden secret located on the main drag on the way out to the port. Formerly the Marine Hotel that was built in the 1880's it was converted into what is now a Bar, Restaurant and Tap Room.
Fully renovated 2 years ago it is now owned and operated by Pip Honeychurch and her partner Hanz Dekker. The place is fitted out with Maritime History and they describe the place as a great pub that serves good food. This is very evident with Hanz being a trained chef in Amsterdam and working in France prior.
Their food is made onsite from fresh produce and ingredients sourced from around the community. Their fresh seafood is sourced through Harbour Fish and their produce from Potato Point Produce in Purakanui. They are famous for their wednesday steak night and those who don't mid a drink can indulge in their Happy Mondays.
The bar stocks New Zealand craft beers on tap and has been well received by residents who can call it their local. For those who are passing by their "Tap Room" is a great spot to fill up a flagon with quality beers.
Both Pip and Hanz share a love for Dunedin and believe it has some of the best coast lines and friendliest people you can meet. The Portsider is definitely worth the drive out to enjoy a great dinner and experience this couples love for quality food and community atmosphere.
Open 7 days a week 3pm to late during the week and 11am to late on the weekend.
