A Winning Brew

by Insiders Dunedin

Where: Forsyth Barr General Admission, Dunedin
When:  12:00PM Saturday, 7 October, 2015

The Dunedin Craft Beer and Food Festival features a homebrew competition each year. The winners are rewarded with an opportunity to brew their winning formula on commercial brewing equipment with the help of a professional brewer.

The winner of last year’s homebrew competition was Brett Houliston, who has been an avid home brewer for close to ten years. The brew that Brett developed was a thick and creamy bourbon oaked porter with a tasty full bodied flavour. As the victor, Brett was given the chance to brew 250 litres of his concoction at Emerson’s Brewery, with the help of head brewer Jim Falconer.

Brett’s Porter will feature in this year’s Beer Festival available at the Festival Stand until stock runs out.

With more than 35 other breweries and 28 food vendors from near and far expected to take part in the festivities, the day is set to be an unforgettable family experience. This year the festival will take over the entire pitch at the Forsyth Barr stadium to ensure there is plenty of space for relaxing, tasting and if you’re in the mood, why not a little dancing? The event will also feature children’s activities and great music, including headlining act, The Black Seeds providing an experience that will please all the senses.

The 2015 homebrew competition is now open for entry. Home brewers are encouraged to take part and try to knock the taste buds off the judges! This is a great opportunity to have your brews tasted and have feedback given by our panel of talented judges, people we’ve handpicked from the cream of the crop of Dunedin’s commercial craft brewers.
