Jason Moore - Vanguard Owner
Where have you been before opening the cafe? What led you to this point?
"Before Opening Vanguard in August 2015, my business partner and I had been involved with Mojo coffee for the past few years, running their Dunedin operations. I had been involved in the Specialty Coffee industry in NZ for as long as I can remember, so setting up Vanguard and pushing the coffee industry forward, especially in Dunedin was always the goal."
What brought you to Dunedin?
"Family commitments and the pursuit of love in the beginning but Dunedin seduced me with its own charms! I'm originally from Wellington and spent many hours immersed in the cafe culture, soaking up the vibe in the capital before heading down south to set up my own cafe and coffee roastery."
What do you love most about Dunedin? When you’re not at Vanguard where do you enjoy eating?
"I really like the vibe Dunedin has going on. All the heritage buildings and restoration work, the street art, the uni, the culture, even the weather (which I really enjoy) and especially the people which makes this city unique.
My favourite restaurant in Dunedin without a doubt is Chopsticks 101. I love Asian food and it’s the only place I would consider myself a regular. In the 50+ times I’ve been to Chopsticks I've never had a bad experience."
What is your favorite dish on the menu and what are you most proud of?
“This is a tough one. All of our cabinet food and menu items are designed to showcase local suppliers and fresh seasonal produce with an emphasis on health, almost everything is made in our kitchen.
I really like changing it up, so probably our market sandwich which changes throughout the week. This is our way of staying with the seasons. Our chefs are amazing and I trust their creations”!
Vanguard is known for its unique wide range of coffee, but their food is just as impressive. The Hot smoked Akaroa salmon and potato latke (gluten free) came served in a cast iron skillet. First impressions were epic. The potato latke was full of flavours, and the salmon was moist and delicately smoked. The herby sour cream cut through the salmon and rustic mash, and was perfected complimented by the lemon dressing in the rocket salad. The final touches of the pickled red onions offered sweetness, texture, and colour. We washed this deliciousness down with Vanguards green smoothie. Being big smoothie fans we had high expectations, and it did not fail to deliver. Two thumbs up from the team, and added to the Saturday morning brunch list.
Insider tip: the addition of a poached or fried egg doesn't go a miss.
