Everyone…well every fashion conscious female in Dunedin knows Belle Bird. It’s that adorable little boutique on George St, brimming with coveted labels such as, Lonely Hearts, Deadly Ponies, Karen Walker, Kate Slyvester, Mickey Loves Mallory, Meadowlark, Deborah Sweeney and Katrhyn Wilson to name but a few. The store recently celebrated it’s 10th anniversary and the woman that’s been there right from the start is owner, Shelley Tiplady. I asked her a few questions about how she feels about the town she now considers home.

Where are you originally from?

I am originally from Auckland and have lived in Dunedin for 15 years.

What do you enjoy most about living here?

Loads of sunshine days and a creative buzz about town. I also love the huge transient population, with so many students coming and going. It gives the town a metropolitan feel of a larger city.

Where’s your favourite place to eat?

My favourite restaurant would be Plato. Really laid back & great food.

Where’s your favourite place to go for a drink?

Probably Pequeno.

Why do you think Dunedin has such a thriving fashion scene?

Dunedin has been a creative hub for years. It particularly kicked of in the 80s, with such a stong local music scene. I think the fashion scene today is a flow on from this.

Other than Belle Bird, where’s your favourite place to shop?

Butterflies op-shop, it’s the best spot for finds. I once bought a Chloe dress from there for $20!

Where’s your favourite place to go on a sunny Sunday afternoon?

Oh so many great spots! Top of the Botanics. Wal's Funland on the out-skirts of Mosgiel, it’s one of our favourite family spots. There’s a great cafe (Topiary), a miniature train track and mini golf too.

If you could describe Dunedin in one word, what would it be?
