The Lovers & The Journey Home

by Insiders Dunedin

A glimpse into the lives of two New Zealand endemic species, the New Zealand sea lion (Phocarctos hookeri), and the yellow-eyed penguin (Megadyptes antipodes). Two sea lions sleep together on a beach as a yellow-eyed penguin makes its way home, returning from the sea. Both these events unfold only metres from each other at Sandfly Bay...(spot the penguin coming out of the water just to the right of the sleeping sea lions).

New Zealand sea lions are one of the rarest species of sea lion in the world and arguably the most threatened because of their declining numbers and restricted breeding range.
